What we can and cannot do
Assisting Australians overseas within limits
Australian travellers should be aware that an Australian overseas mission can only provide a very basic safety net for travellers in difficulty. Travellers need to be aware that Australians who enter a foreign state become subject to its laws and are legally accountable for acts they commit on its territory. In the event of an Australian citizen finding him or herself in difficulty, Australian Consular officers will seek to ensure that Australian citizen receive the benefit of the same laws, administration, protection and means of redress which the foreign state affords its own subjects.
If you do happen to encounter serious problems while you are in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Fujian, Yunnan or Hainan Province, you should seek the assistance of the Australian Consulate-General, Guangzhou. However, there are very clear limits to what the Australian Goverment and its officers can do.

Because of this uncertainty, it is worthwhile checking with the office where the marriage will be registered to find out what is required.A local Chinese government office may require one or more of the following documents.
Witnessing and Certifying documents
