Guangzhou Researcher Explores Cultural Differences in Business

Dr Deng Jingsong from the School of Business at Sun Yat-sen University has been awarded a prestigious Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Research Fellowship by the Australian Government.

“The Endeavour Programme brings high achieving students, researchers and professionals from around the world to Australia for study, research or professional development in a broad range of disciplines and also enables Australians to do the same abroad,” Mr Sean Kelly, the Australian Consul-General in Guangzhou, said today.

“Dr Deng’s research proposal reflects on the cultural differences between Australian and Chinese businesses which is important as the volume of trade between Australia and China reaches AU$50 billion and continues to expand,” Mr Kelly added.

Dr Deng aims to explore the trust mechanisms in top management teams by conducting cross-cultural studies and collaborative research with the leadership research team at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management in Sydney, Australia.

“I am pleased that this Award will allow me to reunite with my colleagues at the prestigious Macquarie Graduate School of Management and advance further understanding between Australia and China,” Dr Deng said.

Dr Deng’s work will seek to understand the diversities in trust structures and processes of Chinese and Australian enterprises, with a particular focus on the influence of these cross-cultural differences on the top management teams.

Suggestions on how to improve the trust management of transnational enterprises and beneficial strategies from their Australian/ Asian counterparts will be provided in light of the findings of this research.
