AUSTRALIAN COUNSULATE GENERAL, GUANGZHOU

MEDIA RELEASE                                           5 April 2007

Australian Alumni Night in Shenzhen

The Australian Consulate-General today announced that it will organize an Australian Alumni Night in Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel from 6-8 pm on Wednesday 16 May 2007. All Shenzhen residents who have returned from study in Australia are invited to gather and celebrate the “Experience Australia” week series activities during the 3rd China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair.

“Many Shenzhen-based students have advanced their careers as a result of receiving high-quality Australian education and training,” the Australian Consul-General in Guangzhou, Mr Sean Kelly, said today. “The Alumni Night is recognition of their success in different fields. We value their experiences in Australia and their important roles as ambassadors to further promote the people-to-people linkages between Australia and China,” Mr Kelly added. Shenzhen is the second largest source of Chinese students from Guangdong Province studying in Australia.

The Australian Alumni Night is sponsored by CPA Australia and Australian Education International (AEI). With a membership of more than 112,000 finance, accounting and business professionals across the globe, CPA Australia is the sixth largest accounting body in the world. AEI is a part of the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training.

At the Alumni Night, Shenzhen’s Australian alumni will enjoy a special buffet menu of Australian-style dishes, along with fine Australian wines. Australian jazz trio Blues Solution and Aboriginal dance group Western Creation will provide the entertainment. Partcipants will also have a chance to see the 20 finalists in the “My Favourite Memory as a Student in Australia” photo competition and cast their vote on-line. (See the Consulate-General’s website for details.)

All Shenzhen residents who have attended an Australian educational program, including short professional development programs and joint programs delivered in China, are welcome to attend on a first-come, first-served basis (places are limited). Eligible Australian alumnists in Shenzhen now can register their interest by e-mail to Ms. Ellen Chen (e-mail: Ellen.Chen@dfat.gov.au ), indicating his or her English and Chinese name, contact information, and graduating Australian institution. The cost of attending is a mere RMB 50 yuan contribution.
