Updated Travel Advice Includes Warning to US Interests in Guangzhou

Dear Australians in south China

I wish to advise that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s travel advice for China was updated on 14 November 2005. The complete text of the travel advice can be found at the following website address:

http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/China

The China travel advice now contains the following information:

On 13 November 2005, the United States Consulate in Guangzhou issued a warden message stating ''The United States Government has received credible information that a terrorist threat may exist against official US Government facilities in Guangzhou. This threat may also exist for places where Americans are known to congregate or visit, including clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools or outdoor recreation events. American citizens in south China are advised to be aware of their surroundings and remain alert to possible threats.''

Westerners frequenting the areas mentioned in the US warden message, including Australians, could be caught up in any attacks.

The Australian Government including the Consulate-General in Guangzhou will continue to monitor this situation and provide updated information as it is available.
