New Passport Laws – Protecting Australia and Australians ( 01 July 2005 )
Media Statement
The new Australian Passports Act 2005 comes into force on 01 July 2005 .
It will make changes designed to complement national security, law enforcement and border protection measures.

New Passport – Adult Passport
The link above provides information on obtaining an adult Australian passport overseas.
The link above also provides the facility to complete and print an application form online. Alternatively, the form can be obtained from the Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou .

Information to assist in completing the application form
Australian Citizenship and your Identity
If a document (e.g. birth certificate) is in a foreign language, an official English translation must be provided.
Renewal – Adult Passport
The link above provides information on the renewal of Australian passports for Australian adult citizens aged 18 years or over who have an Australian adult passport (valid for at least 2 years) which is current or has expired within the last 12 months and shows their current personal details. This passport must not be lost, stolen or damaged.
The link above provides the facility to complete and print an application form online. Alternatively, the form can be printed by the Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou .

Child Passport

Where documents are in a foreign language, an official English translation must be provided.
Time Required to get a passport
Since December 2003, all passport applications for full validity Australian passports received by the Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou are transmitted to Canberra for processing and production. The passports are then returned to the Consulate-General within 10 working days.
Child passports may take longer to process if the full parental consent is not provided.
Photograph Requirements
There are strict requirements in relation to photographs that can be accepted for passport applications. Please follow the link for more information on these requirements.
Lost/Stolen Passports
If you have an urgent unforeseen need to travel and cannot wait to receive a full validity passport, you may be able to obtain a limited validity, emergency passport. Please contact the Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou for further information.
Australian citizens in mainland China, who have lost their passport or have had their passport stolen, will need to report the loss/theft to the local police or Public Security Bureau and obtain a loss/theft report .
To enable them to exit mainland China, foreign passport holders are required to have a Chinese visa in their travel document. Citizens should approach their local Public Security Bureau for information on the procedure to obtain a replacement Chinese visa in their replacement passport. Presently the Public Security Bureaus require the police loss/theft report as part of the application process.
Please note: Citizens who do not obtain the replacement Chinese visa will not be allowed to depart mainland China .
Urgent and unforeseen need to travel
If you have an urgent unforeseen need to travel and cannot wait to receive a full validity passport, you may be able to obtain a limited validity, emergency passport. Please contact the Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou for further information.
Chinese visas
(a) Transfer Chinese visa to new passport (previous passport not lost or stolen)
Once a replacement passport has been issued, citizens should approach their local Public Security Bureau for information on the procedure to transfer their Chinese visa to their new passport.
(b) Lost/stolen passports - Chinese visa in replacement passport
Australian citizens in mainland China, who have lost their passport or have had their passport stolen, will need to report the loss/theft to the local police or Public Security Bureau and obtain a loss/theft report .
