China-Australia Vocational Education and Training Symposium
to Open in Guangdong

On 19th June 2007, Australian Education International of the Department of Education, Science and Training and the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education will co-host the China-Australia Vocational Education & Training Symposium – Guangdong. The Symposium aims to provide a valuable opportunity for Australia and Guangdong to share experiences in vocational education and training and look at strategies for the future of the cooperative relationship between the two sides.

“Australia is a world leader in vocational education and training,” the Australian Consul-General in Guangzhou, Mr. Sean Kelly, said today. “The investment which the Australian Government has made over the past two decades in our national training infrastructure has provided a rich source of experience, models, and intellectual capacity,”

“Guangdong and Australia face common challenges,” Mr Kelly explained. “Strong economic growth has created an urgent need for skills in many key industries. Advances in technology and innovation and changing patterns of employment are creating new challenges for both our training systems. China and Australia can learn from each other on how to address these common challenges,” Mr. Kelly added.

The Symposium, jointly hosted by the Guangdong Education Department, brings together experts from Australia and China to discuss lessons learned in vocational training. Senior experts from Australian public and private training organisations will attend the forum. Mr. Kelly will deliver an opening address.

More than 30 Australian vocational education and training experts from the Australian Embassy in Beijing, AusAID Beijing, the TAFE Directors Australia, the Australian Council for Private Education and Training, universities, TAFE institutions and other private education providers will attend the event. Leaders from the Guangdong Education Department and over 100 principals or senior executives from Guangdong tertiary vocational education institutions will attend this Symposium. The high level of attendance by Australian and Guangdong vocational education and training sector indicates the importance both the Australian Government and the Guangdong Provincial Government attaches to their cooperative partnership and their common commitment to strengthening the bilateral education relationship.
