The Australian CATS in Guangzhou
The Australian production of the world famous Broadway musical CATS will undertake a 7 week tour of China from early January to late March 2008. The show will premier in Guangzhou from 5 -10 January at the Tianhe Sports Centre before travelling to other cities in China, including Beijing, Shenzhen and Dongguan.
CATS was composed by British playwright, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and is based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and other poems. The show debuted in London in 1981 then in Sydney in 1985 and has since gone on to become one of the most successful and longest running modern musical performances. The musical has been performed around the world and translated into numerous languages.
“It is very exciting to have the Australian production of this award winning musical showing here in Guangzhou,” Acting-Consul General, Lyall Crawford said. He added “I am sure those of us lucky enough to attend the performance of CATS will witness Australian performing art at its zenith. The professionalism and artistic prowess of the Australian cast and crew of CATS is world renowned. They will showcase Australian high culture to our friends here in China and it is my firm belief that cultural exchange provides a key underpinning of all countries’ bilateral relationships.”
To welcome the Australian CATS casts, Australian Consulate-General will, in conjunction with the Xinghai Concert Hall, host a New Year’s Eve Reception at the Xinghai Concert Hall.
