New Australia Skills Assessment Service for Migrants

People with relevant trade skills wishing to migrate to Australia would benefit from a new system implemented by the Australian Government which would assess their job skills, simplify their entry to Australia; and offer quick access to the work place upon arrival in Australia.

The Minister for Employment, Mr Joe Hockey and the Minister for Immigration, Kevin Andrews, announced the successful provider of a new streamlined and robust service to assess people with trade skills wishing to come to Australia.

The new service would be provided by a consortium of Victorian and Western Australian training organisations and Mr Hockey said that later this year, all prospective migrants with trade skills would be tested to Australian standards before coming to Australia.

“The new service is a world first for skills recognition and means more certainty for migrants and more certainty for employers. It comes as a result of extensive consultation with industry and state and territory governments.” he said.

Immigration Minister Andrews said that the new service would include an assessment of qualifications, skills and licensing requirements to make it easier for skilled migrants to work immediately upon arrival in Australia.

“The scheme will also assist in meeting Australian industry demands,” he added.
Applications from prospective migrants for the new system would be accepted from 1 September 2007.

The consortium of work and industry groups would work with the Australian Government to ensure a smooth transition to the new arrangements.
