Anti-Japanese Protests in China
Large anti-Japanese protests have taken place in a number of Chinese cities over the past week and have in some instances become violent.
There are reports that further protests may take place over the weekend of April 16-17 2005 at the following locations: Beijing, Saturday April 16 2005 at Tiananmen Square; Shanghai, Saturday April 16 2005 at People's Square followed by a march to the Japanese Consulate-General on Wanshan Road; Guangzhou, Sunday April 17 2005 at Tianhe Stadium and possibly other locations on Friday April 15 2005 and Saturday April 16 2005. Other possible locations for protest activity include the cities of Shenyang, Dongguan, Tianjin, and Chengdu.
Australians are reminded that the travel advice for China advises Australians to be alert to their own security.
