CONSUL-GENERAL’S AUSTRALIA DAY MESSAGE
Australia Day is a time when Australians all over the world come together to celebrate our achievements as a nation and to reflect upon the values that make us who we are. As the new Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, recently said in his Australia Day message: “It is an occasion, more than any other, when we express our national pride in our distinctive landscape, our diverse society and our unique lifestyle. Each year we are reminded of what it means to be Australian, sharing a sense of community, a mood of optimism and a commitment to the fair go.”
The Australian expatriate community in southern China is diverse, with many people making this part of the world their long-term home, while others are just passing through. Regardless of the length of stay it is important that Australians abroad maintain their connection to Australia. To this end, we are fortunate in southern China to have a very strong and active Australian community, with groups such as Austcham- South China, Wallaby Teds and Aussie Sheilas providing an opportunity for Australians to come together with other Australians for social or business purposes. You can find their contact details below.
This year the Consulate-General has joined with these Australian community groups to jointly organise an Australia Day event on 26 January at Golden Lake Garden in Guangzhou for all Australians and their friends. Details about the event can be found on the Austcham- South China website: www.austcham-southchina.org . I encourage all Australians to take this opportunity to connect with other Australians in the region and enjoy a fun day out with family and friends.
I also encourage all Australians living and travelling in the region to register with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Please help us by passing this important message on to your Australian friends. Australians can register online (www.smartraveller.gov.au ) or in person at any Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. The information provided will help us contact our citizens in an emergency – whether it is a natural disaster, civil disturbance or family issue.
Wishing you all a happy Australia Day and a safe and prosperous 2008!
