Consular Bulletin to Australians in Southern China
All Australians have been deeply saddened by the terrible loss of life and suffering of so many people following the catastrophic earthquake in Sichuan province in May 2008. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has written to Premier Wen Jiabao who greatly appreciated Australia’s immediate offer of practical assistance of the expert urban search and rescue capabilities of the Emergency Management Australia.
As soon as the scale of the earthquake was known, all registered Australians in Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu and Shaanxi were contacted to assess their welfare. It was a major operation for the Consulate-General in Guangzhou and the Embassy in Beijing made easier by registration details such as daytime telephone number and e-mail addresses. If you have received this e-mail you are registered with the Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou for which we thank you. We request your assistance to encourage Australians who are not registered to do so. In the event of a pandemic, for example, we would undertake the same operation again but can only call those people we know of through their registration. I cannot stress strongly enough how important registering with the Consulate-General is in the event of a natural or civil disaster.
