Science Diplomacy Tour 2012 Guangzhou
Over 80 of Guangzhou’s leading business people and scientists attended a high-level seminar in Guangzhou on reviving waste and innovative recycling in manufacturing.
The speaker was one of Australia’s leading scientists, Professor Veena Sahajwalla, who is delivering a science diplomacy tour across China and India, sponsored by the Australian Government. In Guangzhou, her seminar was co-hosted by the Guangzhou Association for Science and Technology and New South Wales Government Guangzhou Representative Office.
Professor Veena is an expert on sustainable materials research and technology. She has received international recognition for inventing an environmentally conscious process of recycling plastics and rubber tires for steelmaking, improving energy efficiency and reducing the amount plastic waste that ends up in landfill.
Attendees from some of Guangdong’s leading enterprises said the seminar was an excellent networking platform for Chinese and Australia business and academia to work together to explore creative ways of recycling renewable materials and resources.
Australian Consul General, Grant Dooley said cooperation on research and science was a key component of the broader Australia-China relationship.
He added, “Guangdong is making great steps towards transforming its economy and improving sustainability and energy efficiency. We welcome Guangdong’s ambitious strategy for industrial upgrade and will share with you an interest for sustainable growth. Australia too is committed to growing a broad-based and sustainable economy.”

2012澳大利亚科研之旅广州站
80多位来自行业及科学界的代表今天在广州共聚一堂,出席了关于垃圾回收与循环利用于制造业的高级研讨会。
研讨会的主讲嘉宾是澳大利亚杰出的科学家韦娜教授,她在澳大利亚政府的资助下,在中国和印度开展了一系列的科研讲座。研讨会的广州站由澳大利亚驻广州总领事馆与广州市科学技术协会及澳大利亚新南威尔士州政府广州代表处共同主办。
韦娜教授是研究可持续材料及技术方面的专家。因发明了利用塑料和废弃轮胎炼钢的技术,提高了能源的利用效率和减少了填埋场的 塑料数量,韦娜教授获得了国内外的认同。
出席本次研讨会的部分广东嘉宾认为这是一个粤澳企业和学者交流的绝佳平台,有助于双方共同发掘更多创新的方法以用于循环利用可再生资源及材料。
澳大利亚驻广州总领事杜恪然先生说研究与科学方面的合作是拓宽澳中关系的重要领域。
“广东在经济转型及提高能源效率及可持续性方面取得了很大的进步。我们欢迎广东转型升级的雄心壮志,也会与广东分享可持续性发展的心得。 澳大利亚也会致力于发掘更宽广的可持续性经济。”总领事补充道。
